The Hut

The view from the balcony.

Well designed open plan living space.

The first view as you come around a bend in the track.

The well equipped kitchen and lounge.

Good solid piles with weatherboard exterior, corrugated iron roof and a deck. Almost a typical Kiwi home.

The first view after coming out of the depths of the rainforest...

Well designed sleeping arrangements.

The Hut is something a bit different. I'm not going to tell you where it is but it is an unexpected find in an area of Catlins rainforest. The moment I first saw it several years ago I wanted to photograph it. There is just something about it that captures the whole male essence in a grunge style I can't resist. I photographed it many times over the years trying out different times of the day and different weather conditions until I got something I liked.

Over the years I have watched it slowly deteriorate and fall apart and it won't be long before the weather gets into it and that will be the end of it. A shame really because a lot of work went into it and it's in a very interesting location. If it was fixed up it would be a useful feature to the area. I really wanted to photograph it before it was gone forever like so many other things in life.

Prints of The Hut are available in poster sizes and very high definition.
